Working together, Ron Talain and Tommy Vargas have benefitted the students of the Redwood City School District, inspired others to become involved, and raised awareness of Redwood City public schools in our community.
Tommy has a long history of being involved with Redwood City schools starting with Orion Elementary School, where his wife, Liz, is a teacher and their three children attended. When the music program in our district was going to be cut in 2009, Tommy stepped up to take action as a RCEF volunteer for the Save Our School Music campaign (SOSM) to preserve instrumental education music for all 5th to 8th grade students. His solution was truly innovative — a Fun Run.
Tommy led negotiations to become a partner with City of Redwood City Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department to produce the 4th of July Parade Run as a fund raiser. Two years later, Tommy joined Rick Hunter's team to organize the inaugural RCEF OktobeRun Half Marathon and 5K and also served on the RCEF Benefit for a Brighter Future committee.
Ron Talain has helped bring fitness to hundreds of kids in the district and also was a key leader in the Save Our School Music effort. In addition to working on the Parade Run and OktobeRun races, Ron started and continues to coach the cross country team at Kennedy Middle School as well as the Ready, Set, Run after-school running program. This program teaches students fitness and life skills and prepares them to complete the Parade Run. He has been the Co-Race Director of the 4th of July Parade Run since 2010 and the OkotbeRun since 2011.
